The Dental Implant Process

placement

During your dental implant placement, your doctor will make a small incision in your gums to securely place the dental implant in the jaw. Next, the area will be cleaned and sutured to begin the healing process, ensuring a comfortable recovery.

Healing

The incision site will be healed in 1-2 weeks. However, it will take 3-6 months for the implant to bond with your jawbone. We will schedule a few check-ups throughout the process to confirm you are healing properly.

Restoration

After the implant bonds with your jaw, we will place your custom-designed restoration, typically a dental crown. It securely attaches to the implant with an abutment. Your smile will be fully restored once your new tooth is in place!

Our team provides a fully comprehensive range of services, from conducting routine exams to treating even the most complex dental cases. With our firm commitment to continuing education and extensive training in a wide variety of techniques and procedures, we are well-equipped to care for the vast majority of your dental needs in the comfort of our modern facility.

Education

Dr. Mandy Grimshaw is a Sandhills native who received her dental degree from the University of North Carolina Dental School.

Dr. Grimshaw has completed post-graduate coursework for treating TMD, sleep apnea, and cosmetic procedures at the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies.
Dr. Grimshaw also uses her advanced training in neuromuscular dentistry to treat TMJ (jaw joint) disorders.

Dr. Ritt Kuhn is also a Sandhills native. He received his dental degree from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.
Dr. Ritt Kuhn has placed and finished nearly 2000 dental implants, including full arch restoration with the All-on-4 system.
Not only does he have a multitude of advanced education and training in implant placement and restoration, but also I.V. sedation.

Awards & Affiliations

Dr. Ritt Kuhn is a member of the American Dental Association, a member of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists , and a member of the Dental Implant Associates of North Carolina. He is certified by the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation and the State of North Carolina in oral and IV sedation and he has completed an externship at the Medical College of Georgia.

Dr. Mandy Grimshaw is a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, a member of the American Dental Association, and a member of the Dental Implant Associates of North Carolina. She completed 278 continuing dental education hours of training in advanced aesthetics and neuromuscular science. She is an Invisalign and Invisalign Teen Preferred Provider. Also, she is certified in Oral Conscious Sedation by the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation and the State of North Carolina. Dr. Mandy Grimshaw has a Botox and filler for TMJ and Cosmetic training is through AAFE (American Academy of Facial Esthetics). Dr. Grimshaw has an ACLS certification (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) for sedation.

Do Dental Implants Stop Bone Loss?

Yes. After losing a tooth, your jaw will no longer be stimulated by the natural pressure of chewing and biting. This causes bone loss to occur and also weakens the jaw bone. When the dental implant post is placed, it will bond directly into the jaw bone and act as an artificial tooth root. This titanium “tooth root” transmits the force of chewing and biting through the dental crown and into your jawbone just like a real tooth would, keeping it healthy and strong.

How Are Dental Implants Made?

Titanium dental implants are made in trusted laboratories that supply a wide selection of pre-selected standard post sizes. The crown, on the other hand, is a custom-made tooth replacement. This ensures you get a personalized result that meets your needs and wishes. Most crowns are crafted out of porcelain, which is durable and matches your natural smile. Once your crown is ready, we will complete the procedure by securely attaching your implant crown in place.

How Long Will My Dental Implant Last?

When placed properly and maintained with care through good at-home hygiene and regular checkups, dental implants can last for 30 years or more. In fact, it’s common for patients to keep their implants for the rest of their lives. The implant restoration, however, may not last as long. Restorations such as dental crowns or overdentures take on regular wear and tear from chewing, biting, and more.
